We have been awarded further National Lottery funding from Sport England's Tackling Inequalities Fund which can be used to tackle inequalities in physical activity levels for community organisations impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a proportion of these funds still to be allocated so interested organisations can still apply to us.
This funding and support has to be targeted to community groups working with Lower Socio-Economic Groups, Black, Asian Minority Ethnic Communities, Disabled People and People with Long-Term Health Conditions (LTC). Its purpose is to assist with engagement and keeping active during both the lockdown and early recovery stages from Covid-19.
So far the funding award has enabled Active Dorset to work with a range of organisations including Age UK North, South and West Dorset; who utilised the funding to offer free online exercise classes to older people, in particular those who have a long-term condition. Also, with our support the charity has adopted a 'moving more guidance' script to support staff and volunteers to have conversation about physical activity levels and signpost effectively.
Sport England's work and contribution to Tackling Inequalities focuses on reducing the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on activity levels in under-represented groups, ensuring gaps between those who are active and those who are not do not widen during this period.
With a strong understanding of the needs and issues in their areas, Sport England initially channeled £3.3m through the 43 Active Partnerships across England to support community groups in their areas as a result of the impacts of COVID-19.
Clive Nelson, Active Dorset's Diversification Manager, commented;
"We had a great response to this funding in our first round and we welcome any additional applications that can support diverse groups across the county. Please get in touch with us at Active Dorset if you think this fund can benefit your community organisation".
