Active Dorset’s Leadership Academy Update

The Dorset Leadership Academy (LA) is key to the recovery curriculum - supporting inclusion, building confidence and social skills for CYP. Prior to the pandemic, the Primary LA (PLA) would typically reach 130 primary schools pan-Dorset. This year, 85 primaries have engaged in the PLA so far. Due to Covid-19, delivery of the PLA to class bubbles means that more children than normal have had exposure to leadership skills than in previous years.

A Secondary LA (SLA) working group has been established for 2020-21, to help create a series of digital workshops/electronic resources for colleagues to tap into during the spring and summer terms. A new strand of leadership for 2020-21 is Wellbeing, and we are currently training our first cohort of 'Wellbeing Mentors' with support from Dorset Mind. Our Step into Sport Leadership Academy is also due to launch its digital resources for 2021.

Dorset Step into Sport camp for 2021

We have previously organised two Step into Sport (SiS) events in Dorset each year as part of the wider leadership academy which provides leadership training and opportunities for young people with and without special educational needs and disabilities. The aim of the programme is to help young people learn vital adaptive leadership skills and to help them become more confident and competent as leaders and role models.

This year we need to run our SiS camps differently, but we are still determined to provide something for every young person who would benefit. Ideal candidates for the SiS programme would include a SEND young person, a young person who lacks confidence in their own ability to be active, or someone in your school community who has become disengaged due to the time out of school.

There are two delivery approaches for Step into Sport this year. Please find summaries of the approaches below along with links to all the content and support material you will need. You can choose between the two or deliver both if you see the benefit. In Dorset we have a clear objective of making sure those who complete the programme have opportunities once they have completed the courses. This might be through leading in school, within the School Games or by linking into community clubs and volunteering. The options are outlined below:

Option 1 - Step into Sport at Home

Young people can access 4 modules which are complemented by pre-recorded films. They will follow the programme in their own time (or if you wish through online PE lessons) and complete the provided workbook as they go along. At the end of the course, you will be able to issue each participant with a certificate as well as letting us know so we can recognise their achievement.

Click here access the Step into Sport at home resource.

Option 2 - Step Into Sport in School

Ideal for schools to deliver as part of Bubble PE sessions for key worker or identified groups. You can work through the resource in your own time within lessons or in small groups to deliver each module. The same four modules are covered with pre-recorded films and activities suitable for the current environment. There are practical tips on how to keep the lessons Covid safe alongside the certificate which you can issue upon completion of the course. Clickhere for the support material and resources you will need to deliver Step into Sport virtually.

For both courses we plan to celebrate each individual achievement in the summer term as part of a celebration day through the School Games network as well as providing the exit routes into the Dorset School Games leadership programme. Please keep us up to date with how many young people have been through the training and we will then provide certificates for you. Access to both sets of resources can be accessed through the links above and can also be found on your School Games area page in the updates section along with lots of other useful resources.

We will be running an informal Zoom drop-in session to offer support and answer any questions you might have about Step in Sport on the following date – Wednesday 10th February from 3.30pm to 5pm. Join Zoom Meeting - https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82292245747
