Active Dorset partnered with Wimborne Amateur Boxing Club in September 2019 to establish a Girls in Gloves Satellite Club at Corfe Hills School for girls aged 14-16.
Girls in Gloves is an England Boxing initiative which aims to increase the number of females participating in the sport by establishing female only school club projects. Wimborne Amateur Boxing Club aims to help young females feel empowered, develop their confidence and increase their motivation to participate in sport and physical activity.
The sessions have been a massive success with around 15-20 girls attending each week in a relaxed and social environment. There is a heavy focus on peer to peer learning with slow progressions to introduce the skills, disciplines and techniques so that the girls have a sense of achievement.
Head coach Dave Rimmer mentioned "away from the physical side of the club, I watched new friendships forming and a new love for sport and fitness, these girls were excited for Monday because they knew they were boxing at the end of the day".
Dave further ensures that mental wellbeing is a golden thread that flows through the sessions with the girls being encouraged to share any concerns and speak freely in a safe environment.
The long term goal for the clubs was to help participants develop and sustain their activity levels by proving that sport and physical activity can be exciting, challenging and worthwhile. As a result, two participants have chosen to do boxing as one of their GCSE sports and another is looking to do their work experience with Wimborne Amateur Boxing Club.
