Slades Park Pavilion, Bournemouth, opened to the public on Bank Holiday Monday, 27thMay.
The Opening Day was a very crowded and positive event, where local clubs offered free taster sessions in All Stars cricket, family bootcamp, junior rugby, canicross and track cycling at the Bournemouth velodrome.
Active Dorset and BCP Council collaborate to develop Slades Park as a flagship model, with the Pavilion acting as the park hub to encourage a more active and healthy community.
Active Dorset will be based in the new Pavilion and responsible for operating it under a long-term lease from BCP Council. The public open space will be open office hours Monday - Friday with accessible public toilets, WiFi and hot drinks. This offer is enhanced when there are sufficient volunteers to open and run the café. The café will have a selection of delicious cakes, ice creams, hot and cold drinks.
One of the most exciting developments at Slades Park is the engagement of the local community; the opening hours of the Pavilion and café will be increased as this volunteer engagement continues to grow.
Active Dorset CIO has been founded as a Charity to engage with local areas and people to develop more active and healthy lifestyles. All surpluses raised at Slades Park will be re-invested to support the delivery of activity or to enhance facilities at the site.
Martin Kimberley, Active Dorset Chief Executive states; Very many people and organisations have been involved in bringing this ambitious project to fruition and would like to thank them all. BCP Council, their Parks Team, and the Seascape Team have been tremendous partners in delivering the Slades Park Pavilion project.
It is the start of an exciting journey to deliver greater activity levels, improved physical and mental wellbeing outcomes for residents."
Larry Austin, Director of Environment, BCP Council commented: "We have an excellent relationship with Active Dorset and we are delighted to be able to extend our partnership working with them to increase levels of physical activity. The refurbished pavilion is a wonderful addition to the Slades Farm and surrounding areas and we are very pleased to open the building, which offers excellent new facilities for the community."
