Active Dorset are hugely excited to announce a new partnership with SPACE Youth Project who will be receiving Satellite Club funding until 2020. The Satellite Club programme is funded by Sport England and aims to create regular physical activity habits among 14-19 year olds, particularly those from under-represented groups within society.
Gary Head, Operations Manager for Active Dorset mentioned, "SPACE Youth Project are doing a tremendous job in supporting young LGBT+ individuals across the county, and we are extremely pleased to be working in partnership to increase the number of young LGBT+ individuals participating in regular physical activity".
Results of an online physical activity survey, completed by SPACE members earlier in the year, proved that 100% of respondents wanted to do more physical activity, but had a preference towards exercising in an enclosed environment with likeminded people. A number of different activities were mentioned by numerous individuals but the most popular activity that SPACE members were interested in doing was self-defence. Sarah Grayer, Project Manager for SPACE Youth Project said, "I am not surprised that self-defence was the most popular activity requested as it highlights the issue that a lot of our members experience abuse when out in public".
The project is planned to start at the end November, where individuals will initially have the opportunity to participate in specifically tailored self-defence sessions focusing on providing participants with the necessary skills to feel confident within their local community. Active Dorset hope the sessions will help to combat issues that the young LGBT+ individuals face on a daily basis by raising the awareness and presence of the LGBT+ community within Dorset.
The Satellite Club will initially focus upon the SPACE Bournemouth and Poole groups, but with plans to eventually expand regular physical activity sessions to the other four groups within Dorset to ensure that physical activity opportunities are available for all SPACE members.
