Dr William Bird MBE
Dr William Bird MBE, is a family GP who started to get his patients more active by setting up the first Health Walk scheme in April 1996. This led to him creating the Green Gym one year later as he realised that companionship and contact with nature were major driving forces in keeping people active. His passion has led him to be a strategic health advisor to Natural England and to set up health forecasts for the Met Office. Whilst CEO of Intelligent Health, William still enjoys being a GP and manages to find some thinking time when running in green spaces.
Founded by Dr William Bird
Getting people physically active not only improves health and wellbeing, it also saves public money and improves our environment. Changing behaviour isn't easy, but our knowledgeable, innovative approach makes it possible – and fun. Founded by Dr William Bird MBE, Intelligent Health is dedicated to increasing physical activity and improving the health of communities around the world. He believes a healthy community needs all stakeholders working together to make a difference. That means people, organisations and leaders. Intelligent Health achieves change through community-wide initiatives (such as their Beat the Street programme), personal activity trackers, social prescription and bringing together key partners.
Beat the Street
An Intelligent Health initiative to engage the local community to be more active!
Beat the Street creates a social norm around physical activity by turning whole towns and cities into a giant game. The community-wide initiative helps people form new habits by challenging them to see how far they can walk, run or cycle over six weeks – although the game is simple it leads to major changes in behaviour with a 10% increase in the proportion of Beat the Street participants meeting Chief Medical Officer guidelines in 2017. Increasing physical activity helps our health, happiness and community. Beat the Street is coming to primary schools in Poole, Purbeck, Weymouth and Portland this autumn, so click here to read more about the initiative!
