Supporting people to move more
Healthcare professionals can play a leading role in supporting patients who are struggling to keep active, with one in four people stating that they would be more active if they were advised by a GP or nurse.
The NHS long term plan says that personalised care should give people the same choice and control over their mental and physical health that they have come to expect in every other aspect of their life. The evidence tells us that people will have better experiences and improved health and wellbeing if they can actively shape their care and support.
At a time when the NHS is under immense pressure, supporting people to keep active can reduce their risk of becoming deconditioned and developing long terms conditions.
We are keen to connect with any healthcare professionals in Dorset to provide support about physical activity, particularly for inequality groups and diverse communities. This might include providing text for patient letters or websites, delivering training and signposting to local opportunities.
The Moving Healthcare Professionals Programme
Moving Healthcare Professionals is a national programme, led by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities and Sport England, to support healthcare professionals to increase their knowledge and skills, and incorporate physical activity within routine care to support quality improvement and better patient outcomes.
The programme includes peer-led training courses led by our physical activity clinical champions, e-learning modules, resources to use during consultations such as the award winning Moving Medicine platform (winner of the Royal College of Physicians Excellence in patient care award for person-centred care 2020) and pilots in NHS Trusts to identify how physical activity can be embedded within the care pathway.
