Ramblers East Dorset - Winter Programme

The Ramblers East Dorset Group again have a varied winter programme which will come into effect on the 2nd of November. After the somewhat disappointing summer, it is hoped the new season will bring some brisk sunny days on which to enjoy the many walks on offer. There will be walks which explore the countryside of the Frome Valley, Wiltshire Downs and the Purbeck Hills, to name but a few . A number of walks also take place within the urban area of Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch, with starting places such as Longham Lakes, BranksomeChine and Fairmile Road Christchurch. Obviously these walks are accessible by public transport.

An exciting innovation will be the Three Towns Border Walk which will be in four stages covering 66 miles. The first three stages will be in November, January and February, with the fourth stage in March on the Spring/Summer programme. The route will approximately trace the borders of Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch.

The Group’s AGM will be held on Tuesday 22 November at 7.30pm at the Hamworthy Club, Magna Road, Canford Magna. Formal business will be followed by a talk by Steve Wallis entitled ‘ Not Just Headless Bodies ‘ about the archaeology of the Weymouth relief road. The meeting will also include a photographic competition for member’s prints on any subject.

The Ramblers Dorset Area AGM starts at 2.00pm on Saturday 26 November in Durweston Village Hall. The guest speaker will be Rodney Whittaker, Chairman of the Ramblers Board of Trustees. The meeting will be preceded by a 6 mile walk via the Jubilee Trail and Bonsley Woods starting at 10am.

The Group’s annual Winter Meal with a Walk has been arranged at the Alice Lisle, Rockford, Ringwood on 29 January 2012. Two forest walks are on offer, one of 7 miles and another of 12 miles, an ideal way to work up an appetite.

Winter is the time when the Group gets down to clearing overgrown and obstructed footpaths and bridle ways and five days have been reserved in the programme to undertake this important work, which is carried in liaison with the local Highway Authorities.
